Toronto Mendelssohn Choir announces 2017/18 season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, under the direction of Artistic Director Noel Edison, will present four subscription concerts during 2017/18 and will perform a number of great orchestral choral works with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as they mark Peter Oundjian’s final season.

The TMC is making two important changes for this season. Three of the concerts will now be performed on two nights. And, new subscription pricing means the more concerts patrons purchase, the more they save.

The TMC continues with its two popular seasonal programs.  Festival of Carols in December at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church has become a tradition for many to welcome the Christmas season with music by choir, brass band and organ, including an audience carol sing-along.  Patrons will now have two nights to choose from for this concert.

Sacred Music for a Sacred Space – a program of music for contemplation and reflection in the beautiful space and acoustics of St. Paul’s Basilica – continues on Good Friday with an additional performance on the Wednesday prior.

The other two concerts in the TMC subscription season will take place in the intimate setting of Church of the Holy Trinity.  The season opens in October with a performance by Noel Edison’s Grammy-nominated chamber group, the Elora Singers.  In March, the TMC and string orchestra will perform two great faith-inspired works by contemporary composers: James MacMillan’s The Seven Last Words on the Cross and Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Messe.

Subscriptions go on sale on June 5th. Patrons who purchase two different concerts will save 10%, 15% with three concerts and 20% with four concerts. Single tickets will go on sale on September 5th.   TMC subscriptions and tickets are sold through RCM Tickets.  For more details visit the TMC subscription webpage.

MacMillan: Seven Last Words from the Cross
Pärt: Berliner Messe

In his Seven Last Words from the Cross, composer James MacMillan attempts to come to terms with the violence and drama of the events on the cross as well to meditate on their spiritual significance. The second work in this concert, Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Messe, flows from quietly reverent duets between parts to full chorus proclamations of faith.
