A letter to the TMC community

2017-18 Season

To the TMC community —

Last night, we became aware of a media report that makes reference to allegations of sexual misconduct against Noel Edison.

News of these allegations may have elicited in you, as it has in us, feelings of shock and sadness.

Faced with this situation, we must make tough decisions, balancing the obligations we have to all parties involved. These parties include Noel and the complainants, and very importantly, they include choristers and all other members of the TMC and Elora Singers community.

TMC brings a focus to the art of conducting – and shares an inside look

2017-18 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir Conductors’ Symposium, now in its eighth year, is an important part of its Emerging Conductors Program to further the development of young conductors. The week-long series of workshops and conducting sessions, led by acclaimed conductor Noel Edison, brings together five conductors from across North America. Participants have the rare opportunity to conduct 100 voices of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and the 20-voice professional Elora Singers in rehearsals throughout the week and in the concluding free public performance on Saturday, January 27th, which is also webcast live.

TMC Announces winner of the 2017 Debbie Fleming Prize for Choral Composition

2017-18 Season

Toronto composer Joannie Ing has been awarded the Debbie Fleming Prize for Choral Composition for her composition The Good News Carol.  This is the third year of the TMC’s Choral Composition Competition for emerging Canadian composers.  For 2017, the competition called on unpublished Canadian composers to submit a sacred or secular work for the Christmas season, not more than five minutes in length, for SATB, either a cappella or accompanied by organ.

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and Huddersfield Choral Society from the UK join forces for a concert on June 4

2016-17 Season

The TMC is thrilled to welcome the UK’s acclaimed Huddersfield Choral Society (founded in 1836) to Toronto this Spring. On June 4th these two world-class choirs will join forces to present a concert of choral classics, featuring many of the greats of English Cathedral music. The choirs will fill Yorkminster Park with a grand symphonic sound.

Toronto Mendelssohn Choir announces 2017/18 season

2017-18 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, under the direction of Artistic Director Noel Edison, will present four subscription concerts during 2017/18 and will perform a number of great orchestral choral works with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as they mark Peter Oundjian’s final season. The TMC is making two important changes for this season. Three of the concerts will now be performed on two nights. And, new subscription pricing means the more concerts patrons purchase, the more they save.

This is the second year of the TMC’s Choral Composition Competition for emerging Canadian composers. For 2016,, the competition called on unpublished Canadian composers to submit a sacred work, not more than five minutes in length, for SATB or double choir, either a cappella or accompanied by organ.

Sacred Music for a Sacred Space, April 2017

2016-17 Season

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir returns to the beautiful setting of St. Paul’s Basilica for its annual Good Friday concert of sacred choral music. This year, the Choir will present an all a cappella program, filling the Basilica with only the sound of 4-part and 8-part vocal harmony. There will be two performances: Wednesday April 12 and Good Friday, April 14, at 7:30 pm.

TMC presents matinee concert of great choral anthems and audience hymn sing – Mar 4

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir is joined by the Minster Singers (of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church) and organist William Maddox for this concert and webcast of choral anthems and an audience hymn sing on Saturday, March 4.
