Associate Conductors – Where are they now?

We are proud to be part of the careers of some of the new generation of choral conductors.

In 2011 the TMC created the position of Associate Conductor to provide talented and world-class-potential choral conductors at an early stage in their career with coaching, training and mentoring, while providing the TMC and its Artistic Director with high-calibre conducting support. The intent is that each Associate Conductor holds the position for two years.

We have had four Associate Conductors to date.

Matthew Otto was TMC Associate Conductor for the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons. Where is he now? Matthew is the Assistant Artistic Director of the award-winning Toronto Children’s Chorus, conductor/co-founder of the Toronto Youth Choir, and conducts Chorealis, Chorale, and Training Choir III. He is also the founder/artistic director of Incontra Vocal Ensemble, a choral-arts collective of likeminded conductors, composers, vocal pedagogues, professional-level singers, and emerging artists.

Caron Daley was TMC Associate Conductor for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons. Where is she now? Caron is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University where she conducts the Voices of Spirit, Pappert Women’s Chorale, and University Singers, and teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting. She is also Founder and Artistic Director of the Halifax Choral Conducting Institute, a summer training program for choral conductors, and Music Director of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir, the youth branch of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.

Jennifer Min-Young Lee was TMC Associate Conductor for the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18 seasons. Where is she now? Jennifer Min-Young is a choral and orchestral conductor and educator. She is music director of the Yemel Philharmonic Society of Toronto. She is also a full-time high school music teacher in York Region District School Board where she teaches vocal, piano accompanying, instrumental and repertoire classes, and choral and wind ensembles under her leadership regularly perform and receive recognition at festivals in Canada, United States and Europe.

Ezra Burke is TMC Associate Conductor for the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons. What else is he doing now? Ezra is also conducting the Beth Tzedec Synagogue Choir, and in Fall 2019 is starting a new choir, the ‘Seraphic Singers’ within the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church Choir School.
