Toronto Mendelssohn Choir rings in the season with the help of the Canadian Staff Band, Dec 10

On Wednesday, December 10th the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir will ring in the season with its annual holiday tradition, Festival of Carols, at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church. This year the Choir welcomes the acclaimed 30-piece Canadian Staff Band, and concert organist David Briggs. The concert will include a wide range of choral music fit for the season, from Gabrieli’s Jubilate Deo with the triumphant sound of full choir, organ and band, to Eric Whitacre’s contemplative Lux Aurumque sung by the choir who will be spread out around the church. There will be traditional favourites, brass band music for the season performed by the incomparable Canadian Staff Band, and seasonal stories narrated by Noel Edison. A carol sing-along will encourage the audience to add their voices to this welcome to the holiday season.

Festival of Carols 2014 Program Notes

One of the joys of Christmas is its predictability. Every year, we associate the Christmas season with familiar images, tastes, activities, objects and sounds. Santa Claus and Ebenezer Scrooge, Handel’s Messiah and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker, roast turkey and cranberry sauce, mistletoe and eggnog…….. brass instruments and choral voices. They all provide a joyous, festive and warm mood to which we enjoy returning year after year.
