Toronto Mendelssohn Choir gives Canadian premiere of Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Mass for the Endangered, a stunning musical call to protect the environment.

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (TMC)’s spring concert celebrates our natural world, and calls on all of us to cherish and protect it. On Saturday, May 28th at 3 pm, the TMC and chamber orchestra, conducted by Jean-Sébastien Vallée, present the Canadian premiere of Mass for the Endangered by American composer Sarah Kirkland Snider.
Mass for the Endangered is a hymn for the voiceless and the discounted, a requiem for the not-yet-gone. Using original text by writer, visual artist, and musician, Nathaniel Bellows, in combination with the traditional Latin, Mass for the Endangered embodies a prayer for endangered animals and the environments in which they live. The San Francisco Classical Voice says of this work that “the music both immerses us in this perilous era and stirs us to examine our collective conscience.”
Also on the program, Aaron Copland’s striking In the Beginning and Andrew Balfour’s Mamachimowin, a TMC commission for the Choir’s 125th anniversary concert in 2019.
Tickets go on sale to the general public on May 4 to attend in person or watch online.
- Endangered takes place at Yorkminster Park Baptist Church with tickets sold to 50% capacity.
- All patrons must provide proof of Covid vaccination and wear a mask.
- In-person tickets are $30, $60 and $90.
- Individual streaming tickets are $20; household streaming tickets are $40. Streaming tickets give access to the concert for two weeks.
