Patrick Hansen is the Artistic Director of TriCities Opera in Binghamton, New York and the Artistic Director of Opera McGill in Montreal where he is an associate professor of music at McGill University. Active in both the academic and professional arenas, Mr. Hansen is a former board member for the Association for Opera in Canada, a board member of the National Opera Association, on the membership council for Opera America, and is on the faculty of the Bel Canto Institute of Tuscany Italy.
Considered a leading progressive figure in opera, he is equally established as a stage director, conductor, vocal coach, and collaborative pianist having spent the last forty-five years on the creative and producing teams for over 350 operas. He is the former director of the Young American Artist Program at Glimmerglass Opera, the former music director of Opera Festival of New Jersey, the assistant editor of G. Schirmer’s “Opera Anthology” series, and been on the music staffs of Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Juilliard Opera Center, Opera Memphis, Tulsa Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and many others.
His recent productions include directing Rigoletto, Il barbiere di Siviglia, La Cenerentola, Cosi fan tutte, Hänsel und Gretel, Alcina, Partenope, Imeneo, Rodelinda, The Impresario, Trouble in Tahiti, Candide, L’elisir d’amore, Acis and Galatea, Albert Herring, The Rape of Lucretia, The Turn of the Screw, Le Nozze di Figaro, Fidelio, Gianni Schicchi, Suor Angelica, La Boheme and the Bulgarian premiere of Weil’s Street Scene. In the fall of 2026 he will direct the Canadian academic premiere of Spears’ Fellow Travelers.
His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are in Piano Performance and he had a two-year fellowship in opera coaching at The Juilliard School. He lives and gardens with his family and pets Severus and Minerva in eastern Ontario. His blogs “CoachCraft” and “PatrickOperaBlog” have over 425,000 views at last count.
