Toronto Mendelssohn Choir performs Bach’s monumental B Minor Mass

March 26, 2014 at Koerner Hall, telus centre for performance and learning

Noel Edison and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir bring together five noted soloists and the Festival Orchestra to perform Bach’s ‘musical testament,’ his great Mass in B minor, in the beautiful acoustics of Koerner Hall. Noel Edison’s skill at bringing choral and orchestral forces together along with the TMC’s clarity of expression are a great match for Bach’s monumental work.

Edison has brought together five critically-acclaimed Canadian soloists: sopranos Jennifer Taverner and Lesley Bouza are joined by mezzo-soprano Jennifer Enns Modolo, tenor Isaiah Bell and baritone Michael York. Four of the soloists sang with Edison’s Grammy-nominated Elora Festival Singers before launching their solo careers.

Bach composed and compiled the Mass in B minor between 1733 and 1749. According to music historian Kevin Bazzana, the Mass in B minor “covers an enormous range in terms of style, form, topic, technique, expression, and performing forces, including movements both archaic and fashionable, lofty and worldly, strict and free. No other single work absorbs so much of Bach’s art or has a better claim to being his musical testament.”

The concert takes place Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 7:30 pm at Koerner Hall, TELUS Centre for Performance and Learning (273 Bloor St. West). New this year, tickets start at $35. Tickets are: $35–$87; $35–$81 for seniors; and $25 VoxTix for patrons 30 and under. Tickets are available from the Weston Family Box Office at Koerner Hall online or by calling 416-408-0208.

Eighty members of the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir recently performed the Dona Nobis Pacem from Bach’s B Minor Mass at the TMC Choral Conductors’ Symposium concert, conducted by Symposium conductor Jeffrey Moellman.
