SUMMARY:Little Match Girl Passion
DESCRIPTION:In This Performance\nLittle Match Girl Passion by David Lang\nDiaries of the Forgotten by Shireen Abu-Khader – a TMChoir commission\nExcerpts from St. Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach \nOn the music\nToronto Mendelssohn Choir presents Little Match Girl Passion — a musical vigil drawing awareness to the problems of hunger and homelessness in our city. This moment of reflection features diverse choral selections centred on excerpts of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion\,  a new commission\, Diaries of the Forgotten\, by our inaugural composer-in-residence\, Dr. Shireen Abu-Khader\, and David Lang’s Pulitzer Prize-winning piece\, The Little Match Girl Passion. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous tale about a poverty-stricken young woman sent out into the cold by her father to sell matches\, this work leads us on a journey where hope and memories meet the harsh reality of the snowy streets. \nAudience members are invited to donate gently used clothing\, particularly coats\, scarves\, socks\, and hats. The generous staff and volunteers of Holy Trinity TO will be on site to share resources on their work and collect the donations. The Holy Trinity strives to work with others in the community to uproot the systemic injustice which entraps the weakest members of our society. \nTickets \nThis concert is made possible by a generous gift from an anonymous donor. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Festival of Carols
DESCRIPTION:In This Performance\nTraditional Christmas Carols and works by Felix Mendelssohn\, Jonathan Dove\, Morten Lauridsen and many more!\nHeartbeat by Shireen Abu-Khader – a TMC commission \nOn the music\nCelebrate this holiday season with Toronto’s beloved tradition — Toronto Mendelssohn Choir’s annual celebration of music: Festival of Carols. This year\, the TMChoir is bringing back the much-anticipated sing-along portion of the concert with pieces such as Joy to the World\, Silent Night\, and O Come All Ye Faithful. Under the direction of Maestro Jean-Sébastien Vallée\, both the TMChoir and TMSingers bring this program to life\, and are joined by guest artist Isabelle Demers on the organ. \nThis year’s program also features a brand-new commission from composer-in-residence Dr. Shireen Abu-Khader: Heartbeat. She writes\, “The starting point for composing this carol stemmed from asking the question\, “Why do all beautiful Christmas carols\, that the world knows\, not match the soundscape of the actual birth of Christ – Bethlehem?” The piece itself uses Byzantine chant and Greek melodies familiar to the composer\, along with newly composed melodies focussing on the welcoming of children and the emotions of motherhood. \n\n\n\n
