CHORAL CONDUCTORS’ SYMPOSIUM – MARCH 16-21, 2009

OVERVIEW

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir’s first choral conductors’ symposium is an opportunity for choral conductors from across North America to participate in a series of workshops with acclaimed conductor Noel Edison, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir and Elora Festival Singers.

Five conductors from across Canada and the United States will be chosen to participate in the week. Each morning will consist of coaching and professional development sessions, with the afternoons and evenings dedicated to conducting masterclasses with the 150-voice Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, 65-voice Mendelssohn Singers, and 20-voice Elora Festival Singers. Each conductor will be given extensive time with all ensembles, and the week will culminate in a public concert, featuring all choirs and conductors.

Noel Edison will work with each conductor on vocal and conducting technique, score interpretation and rehearsal organization. Mini-discussions on choir administration will be lead by TMC staff and guests. All sessions will be videotaped.

REPERTOIRE

The repertoire for the week will include music from five centuries - from Palestrina, Byrd, Bach, Handel, Brahms, Mozart, to Willan, Tavener, Whitacre and Holman – allowing each conductor to experience the intimacy of working with a professional chamber choir as well as a large symphonic chorus.

FEES

The fee of $500 (CDN) includes all sessions for the week, lunch, music, videotapes and post-concert reception. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation, and should plan to arrive in Toronto by Sunday evening, March 15 and depart no sooner than 8 pm Saturday evening, March 21. Limited financial assistance is available on an as-needs basis. Please include a short letter with your application, stating your needs.
